XVIIth INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP ”PRIVACY, DATA PROTECTION & SURVEILLANCE”
23 July 2023 | 12:00pm – 6:00pm
Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society, Französische Str. 9, 10117 Berlin
With this workshop, we want to offer particularly young researchers the opportunity to present and discuss current research work from the very broad and diverse research field of privacy, surveillance, and data protection in an interdisciplinary environment. We welcome article and dissertation projects, theoretical and empirical work, analyses as well as proposed solutions from all disciplines – and it may explicitly be work in progress. In addition to the discussion of open research questions, the workshop will particularly focus on the critical reflection of the participants’ own research premises, school(s) of thought, and discipline(s).
After experiencing numerous “ups” and “downs” – or “summers” and “winters” – “Artificial Intelligence,” particularly in the form of Machine Learning (ML), is once again at the center of public and academic attention. Issues arise regarding various aspects, including the training of ML models, often due to the use of large quantities of personal data, the trained models themselves, as they may reflect the biases or distortions inherent in the data, or the practical deployment of these systems, which could lead to discriminatory outcomes – or any combination of all these aspects. Which of these identified problems can and should be addressed using theories and concepts from the research field of privacy, data protection & surveillance? For which of them already exist viable solutions? Moreover, what challenges exist, whether in the quest for solutions or in their implementation, whether conceptually or practically, whether viewed from a disciplinary perspective or within interdisciplinary contexts?
