Simba: AI-supported text simplification
We have developed two programmes to help you understand German online texts. The first is an app that you can use to make your own texts easier. The second is a browser extension that automatically summarises texts on websites. Both programmes use AI-based language models to simplify texts. They reduce complexity while retaining the most important information. You can find out how the programmes work and how to use them on this website.

What is an Internet browser extension?
A browser extension is a small programme that you install in your Internet browser. It is also known as an "add-on" or "plug-in". After installation, you will see an icon in the status bar that you can use to call up the functions of the extension.
What do you need to bear in mind when using Simba?
Our browser extension only reads the first 2600 words on a web page to simplify the text. If you want to simplify a longer text, you can use our internet app. This app can analyse any text without a word limit. It helps you to understand long texts.
Important note: The browser extension always summarises all texts (including English texts) in German.
What is simplified language?
Simplified language makes it possible for everyone to read and understand information online. This includes people with learning difficulties who do not speak the same language or older people. Complex issues can be slow and difficult to understand. That's why the simple sentences and explanations for difficult words help make information quick and easy to understand. This means that everyone can be part of the digital world.
Who developed Simba?
The Public Interest AI research group has developed Simba. The aim is to find out what a "Public Interest AI" should be. We are working on realising these ideas in practical models, such as Simba. The code and models are openly accessible, which enables collaboration and transparency.
