XVIIIth INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP ”PRIVACY, DATA PROTECTION & SURVEILLANCE”
10 December 2024 | 12.00 pm – 6.00 pm
Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society
Französische Straße 9, 10117 Berlin
With this workshop, we want to offer particularly young researchers the opportunity to present and discuss current research work from the very broad and diverse research field of privacy, surveillance, and data protection in an interdisciplinary environment. We welcome article and dissertation projects, theoretical and empirical work, analyses as well as proposed solutions from all disciplines – and it may explicitly be work in progress. In addition to the discussion of open research questions, the workshop will particularly focus on the critical reflection of the participants’ own research premises, school(s) of thought, and discipline(s).
Personalisation, whether of advertising, content, products, or medicine, is a growing trend – or perhaps hype – across many areas, claiming to focus on addressing individual needs, preferences, and behaviours. Whether a trend or hype, what is characteristic of personalization is the need for data on these needs, preferences, and behaviours, along with the constant demand for more and increasingly detailed data. This hunger for data is not the only dark side of personalization. There are public and academic discussions surrounding personalised disinformation and manipulation, echo chambers and filter bubbles, discrimination, and the loss of diversity. How can the undesirable implications of increasing personalisation be addressed in theory and practice? Are these even data-induced implications that can be solved through regulatory, ethical, or practical approaches to data?
