Digitaler Salon: Machine Gun Learning

Once a month, we publicly discuss the impact of digitisation on society at Digitaler Salon. We invite special guests, engage in a dialogue with the audience and the Twitter community and broadcast it on YouTube. In September, we will talk about autonomous weapon systems. Below you will find more detailed information. The event will be held in German.

In unserer Gesellschaft befindet sich die Diskussion über autonome Waffensysteme in einem Spannungsfeld zwischen technologischen Möglichkeiten, politischer Verantwortung und rechtlichen Implikationen. Als digitale Technologien werden ihnen heutzutage zahlreiche militärische Aufgaben wie die Zielauswahl und Verteidigung aber auch gezielte Tötungen von Menschen übertragen. Ihre Bandbreite reicht von einfachen Landminen über komplexe Kampfdrohnen bis hin zu eigenständig agierenden Robotern. Können oder sollten solche Maschinen ohne menschliche Kontrollmechanismen Entscheidungen treffen? Was ist konzeptionell sowie technisch möglich und was Fiktion? Welche ethischen und rechtlichen Regulierungen braucht es und welche sind überhaupt wirkungsvoll? Und wie können diese in Zukunft international durchgesetzt werden?

Die Moderatorin Katja Weber (radioeins, Deutschlandfunk Nova) diskutiert mit: Reinhard Grünwald, ist Physiker und wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Büro für Technikfolgen-Abschätzung beim Deutschen Bundestag (TAB). Er hat den TAB Bericht zu Autonomen Waffensystemen verfasst.

With good weather conditions we open doors from 6.30 pm. To join the event onsite please register below. In addition the talk will be broadcasted live on hiig.de. from 7 pm (no registration needed). Then join in – via Twitter or Slido using #DigSal. Digitaler Salon takes place every last Wednesday of the month under a different question. In order to be able to trace possible chains of infection, due to the SARS-CoV-2 Containment Measures Ordinance we are obliged to keep a record of attendance. In the rooms of the institute, a face mask must be worn outside of your own seat. A minimum distance of 1.5 metres applies to all visitors. Visitors with cold symptoms and fever should not attend the event.
