Finding the essence. Businesses facilitating knowledge transfer

Startups play an increasing role in facilitating knowledge transfer processes, including the transfer of scientific results into society, businesses, and politics. At our September meetup, we welcome two speakers who both founded knowledge-driven startups. They will talk about their experience of becoming founders as well as their perspective on knowledge transfer and the impact of science:

  • From dissertation to startup to thriving business – Dr. Robin Tech, founder of AtomLeap, a big data analytics startup based in Berlin. He’s also a researcher at the Berlin Science Center and MIT, Cambridge, and an alumni of HIIG.
  • The challenges and pleasures of creating content businesses – Sebastian Klein, founder of Blinkist and partner at the think tank TheDive. He is a publisher of the magazine Neue Narrative.

Meetup series

This meetup is part of a regular series on the impact of science jointly organised by Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG), Impact Distillery, and Elephant in the Lab.
There is a pressing need for informed expertise from virtually all fields of academic research. Still, scientific expertise often remains within its own domain and only reaches relevant decision-makers in civil society indirectly and belatedly. The prevalence of citation metrics to measure scholarly impact often compels researchers to focus on article publications in disciplinary journals. Prominent policy makers and research funders therefore increasingly place the question of societal impact at the top of their agenda.
The event series aims to create a platform for experts and the interested community around Open Science, Knowledge Transfer and related topics. In short talks we invite experts to shed light on the exchange between politics, business, media and academia. Individual meetups explore disciplinary particularities and innovative formats of knowledge exchange.
