Towards Data Justice? – Lunch talk with Arne Hintz
Citizenship and Social Justice in Times of Datafication
Wednesday, 1 February 2017 · 1pm · HIIG Kitchen
The collection and processing of massive amounts of data is becoming an increasingly contentious issue. Our communications, movements, relationships, and public and private interactions all generate data that are used to profile and categorize us. With the emergence of this data paradigm comes a new set of power dynamics and governance models, as well as challenges for social inclusion, basic freedoms, and established notions of accountability. In this talk, Arne Hintz will explore what datafication means for social justice. He will review various responses to data-based monitoring, including policy advocacy and technological development; address their limitations; and introduce the wider agenda of data justice.
Arne Hintz is Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies where he serves as Director of the MA Digital Media and Society and Co-Director of the Data Justice Lab. Recently he was Principal Investigator of the collaborative research project “Digital Citizenship and Surveillance Society: UK State-Media-Citizen Relations After the Snowden Leaks.” His research connects digital citizenship, communications policy, and media activism.
The lunch talk is open to the public, please register via the form below.
