Philipp Mahlow

Philipp Mahlow has been a research assistant in the Human in the Loop? project since April 2024.

While studying law at the University of Cologne, Philipp specialized in innovation regulation, in particular regarding artificially intelligent systems. Since the publication of the Commission’s draft, he has been working extensively on the European AI Regulation and other AI-related regulatory acts, such as the AI Liability Directive. He is particularly interested in interdisciplinary considerations regarding the compatibility of legal requirements with technical possibilities. In addition to working in the patent litigation team of an international law firm, he has already worked in a research project on AI test, training and validation data quality.

Philipp is currently pursuing his PhD at the University of Innsbruck with his thesis focussing on the requirements for the explainability of AI systems. He also lectures on various effects of European AI regulation.
