encore is an annual research magazine on internet and society research, published by the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG). The magazine features a number of selected articles on relevant topics from throughout the year. Additionally, representatives from science, business and politics share their perspectives on questions around internet and society. encore is completed by HIIG’s annual research report. In this issue of encore, we share stories that reflect the breadth of our research: AI empowering workers to reclaim agency in datafied workplaces, the evolving regulatory framework of the EU’s Digital Services Act and Indigenous communities blending ancestral wisdom with digital tools. We also explore whether human oversight is essential in automated decision making. Our events, educational resources and prototypes bridge the gap between research and practice. They challenge entrenched misconceptions about science, provide tools such as Claimspotting to help monitor potential misinformation and foster a deeper understanding of how to measure AI fairness.
